Why Heat Protection Is Non-Negotiable (Even When Blow-Drying)

When we think about heat damage, most people immediately picture straighteners or curling wands. But one of the biggest culprits is often overlooked — your hairdryer.

Heat damage doesn’t just come from extreme styling tools. Any temperature over roughly 130°C can begin to weaken the hair’s protein structure, and most hairdryers easily exceed this. That means even a quick blow-dry without protection can slowly contribute to dryness, breakage, and split ends over time.

When hair is exposed to heat without protection, the water inside each strand heats up rapidly. This creates stress within the hair fibre, leading to tiny cracks in the outer layer (the cuticle). Over time, this results in hair that feels rougher, looks duller, and becomes more prone to snapping.

This is where heat protection plays an important role. Rather than simply “coating” the hair, heat protectants help reduce how quickly heat is transferred into the strand, minimising moisture loss and helping to maintain the hair’s overall condition.

Even if you’re only using a hairdryer, you’re still exposing your hair to heat. And while the damage might not be immediate, it builds over time.

Healthy hair isn’t just about what you avoid — it’s about what you protect.
